CBTS History

CBTS was initiated in 2008 by the Competence Centre in Tourism Management and Tourism Economics (TOMTE) at the Free University of Bolzano. Scientific coordinator Oswin Maurer, along with TOMTE members, launched the conference as a small-scale, personal gathering aimed at promoting in-depth discussions. Its initial goal was to support emerging researchers while offering workshops on research methodologies and analytical techniques.

Over time, the CBTS community expanded, maintaining a friendly and collaborative character. The symposium became a trusted platform where young academics could share their findings, receive mentorship from experienced scholars, and connect with peers across the globe. CBTS has always emphasized a combination of scientific rigor and a welcoming environment, which sets it apart from larger, more impersonal conferences.

CBTS Transition

In 2023, CBTS moved to Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) in the Netherlands. While retaining its original format, the symposium evolved under the leadership of senior members such as Perry Obson and Corné Dijkmans. The new setting maintained ties with former members while strengthening connections with industry stakeholders, emphasizing practical relevance alongside academic research. This transition reflects CBTS’s adaptability and commitment to innovation in tourism research.

Key Themes

  • 2008–2015: CBTS focused on foundational issues in consumer behaviour, examining travel decision-making, tourism demand, and quality-of-life research. The symposium explored emerging trends and challenges, offering insights into both theoretical frameworks and practical applications.
  • 2016–2023: Later editions emphasized experiences, emotions, and memory in tourism research, incorporating mindfulness, well-being, and tourism analytics. The symposium expanded to include hybrid and online formats, reflecting changes in the global research environment and travel industry.
